Driver CPC Training

The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) has warned that,

“You face being fined up to £1,000 and even losing your livelihood if you don’t finish your training in time”.

The Office of the Traffic Commissioner has also reminded operators to be aware of their drivers’ training hours and deadlines to avoid penalties.

To stay within the rules, all drivers must do 35 hours of periodic training every 5 years.

Bus and coach drivers with acquired rights had until 10 September 2013 to finish their first 35 hours of periodic training.

The deadline for lorry drivers with acquired rights is 10 September 2014.

The Driver CPC (Certificate of Professional Competence) is a European wide Training Directive, the aim of which is “to maintain high driving standards and improve road safety”.

Driver CPC was introduced on 10th September 2008, for coach and bus drivers and 10th September 2009, for lorry drivers.

If you had a valid PCV or LGV licence prior to the start dates you will be able to continue driving professionally under what is called ”grandfather” rights. You will need to undertake 35 hours of periodic training, which must be completed within five years of the start date in order to renew your Driver CPC.
